Things to Get Ready When Getting a Puppy
Things to Purchase Before Bringing Puppy Home:
Remember to puppy proof your home, this included babygating off stairs, hiding electric cords, shoes, and anything else you do not with to be destroyed. Designate an area in your home (ie. babygating kitchen or using a puppy pen) to contain puppy safely when not being supervised. Puppies will get into trouble if left to their own devices and unsupervised.
- Crate: You can purchase a smaller crate and upgrade sizes as puppy gets older, but as they grow so fast I recommend buying a giant crate right off the get go. If need be, you can make the crate size smaller with a divider (or a baby gate works well as well.
- Puppy Pen if working outside the home. A potty box may be required in addition to this.
- Food/Water Dish as well as a measured scoop/scale for food: Nutrition is so important for growing puppies and you will be frequently increasing their food, a scoop is vital for knowing how much you are feeding. If feeding raw, a small scale is necessary for weighing the food. Please start your puppy off with the food recommended by myself. Many raw brands do not have a nutritional analysis done and I cannot confirm the calcium/phos ratios. Puppies were weaned onto Nature Balance Lamb and Brown Rice and I recommend continuing to feed this.
- Thermometer: This is needed for every dog first aid kit.
- Supplements: MSM, Vitamin C, pumpkin, CoQ-10, glucoasmine HCL, a good quality fish or krill oil, cranberry capsules.
- Nail Clippers or Dremel: My preference is a dremel and puppies have been introduced to a dremel from an early age. You are much less likely to cut the quick with a dremel and it doesn't leave sharp edges like clippers do.
- Toys: Good quality toys are never a bad thing and keep puppy occupied.

Preparing for Puppy at Home:
- Block off all access to stairs. There are two reasons for this. First, Great Dane puppies grow so fast that are incredible clumsy, especially after a growth spurt. The second reason is that once they are comfortable with stairs they will often jump the bottom 2-3 steps, this will cause unecessary impact and strainon their growing shoulder and elbows which can affect them later in life as majority of their weight is carried on their front limbs. (This is also a good time to remind that you should try to prevent them from jumping off the couch whenever possible.)
- Area for puppy to stay when unsupervised:
- Tuck away any loose electrical cords:
- Keep closet doors closed
- Ensure puppy can't squeeze through stair or patio rails. Be mindeful of the back of couches if against a rail, once puppies can climb onto couch this becomes a hazard.
- Keep toxic plants up and away from puppies.
- Keep medications up high and do not leave on counters.
Health Issues Common in Great Danes:
The purpose of health testing is to stack the deck in our favour to minimize the risk of potential health issues, however, at the end of the day every breeder is rolling the dice and taking a gamble. Sometimes, no matter how cautious you are, things can pop up. As breeders, we can only do our best and try do right to our puppy people. In turn, I ask that if a health issue arises, that you contact me promptly and we (along with your veterinarian) discuss what is best.
Blue Great Danes can be more sensitive to skin issues due to the recessive genes that make their coat blue. Their coats can be thinner, and brittle than other colours to varying degrees. This can sometimes cause individual hairs (especially as puppies) to break off at skin level and form small pustules. Owners can get frustrated thinking their Great Dane has a skin infection, however, if you keep them clean, it should resolve when they blow their puppy coat.
